'51% of adults were registered as
married in 2007, compared with 59%
in 1998, according to the Offi ce of
National Statistics. Within a year it is
anticipated that it will fall below 50%.
The number of weddings in England
and Wales is now the lowest it has
been since 1895 – despite a vastly
increased population. Almost half of
women living outside wedlock had
children. Recent changes in the tax
and welfare system mean that married couples can be up to
