The changing world (24) Aug - Dec 1972

Mission conference at Miango with good expositions from John Dean.  Sept 1 received May allowance. Two fab terrorists shot a Munich Olympics. Regular preaching Hausa and English and leading Bible studies. I can now do the Hausa without first translating and writing it all down. Ernie Adicott of MAF Chad flew over low. Involved in our houseboys court case over marriage. Preached at Hillcrest School.
I collected Nigerian stamps. Getting them locals was frustrating so I ordered commemoratives from Lagos. I have a complete selection from our years in Nigeria.
Oct 20 at 2:45 a.m. David Malcolm Weeks made his appearance. No breech this time. 7ib 4oz.  Frances Barnden, daughter of Vom's pioneer arrived. to visit. Evangelists reported six conversions including one Muslim. Jonathan by November managed the greetings, sannu and lafiya.
Nov 4 Vom's jubilee with the governor Police Commissioner Gomwalk as guest of honour. He was later executed after a failed military coup. I met a soldier imprisoned with him but released. I was told the trial was illegal. A civilian was tried by a military court in secret. His sister in law was given her release in exchange for incriminating testimony. He and others accused were publicly executed by firing squad on bar beech, Lagos. The first their families knew was seeing it live on TV. But that was three years ahead.
I had tea with the local chief. All Nations taught us well on cultural anthropology but there was one huge mistake. No-one told us that on going to a new place the missionary should greet the chief and the head of local government. This is the opposite of our culture where visitors to London do not routinely greet the queen and mayor routinely. Nov 13 Timothy Bulmer born.
A couple of days in bed with over. Consecutive Romans preaching. December holiday at Dogon Dutse the Lutheran place in Jos. Visited the nearby reservoir at Liberty Dam. Visited Cattos. Gordon told me that columbite mined locally yields tantalum and niobium. Swam at Elm House pool, a treat. No petty pool rules and Jos is warm enough that outdoor pool is warm except August and December at times but fine for us. On to Mango where once again we met the Koops of CRC. Mango cost us £14 for six days' stay. I must have ended the year on a down as the last two weeks went unrecorded, the first time in five years of daily diary.
Visitors from England, Nigeria, Chad, Togo, Scotland, Denmark. N Ireland, Australia and USA.
