Great Bernera

Great Bernera is an island off the west coast of Lewis, connected by this Bridge Across The Atlantic. Opened in the 1953 it means that the island thrives today when other islands have been completely depopulated.
By the bridge is Callanish VIII also called Cleitir, a semi circle of standing stones probably 4000 years old. Beyond are the mountains of Harris.
Kirkibost in the south east of the island is a centre for lobster fishing. A boat was being built there when we visited. One thing that struck us was the number of new dwellings on the islands.Planning permission seems to be no problem and the authorities are happy for old dwellings to become ruins as can be seen on the right of this bungalow. Presumably it is cheaper to bring in new materials than utilise the old stones. This and the habit of abandoning old vehicles can be a blot on the landscape.
