The ferry to Berneray approaches Leverburgh. Berneray, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay are now all connected by road.
The ferry runs three or four times a day, even on Sundays though there had been opposition to the introduction of Sunday sailings. There are no Sunday sailings on the Lewis and Harris ferries to the mainland or to Skye.
This is one of the smallest Ro-Ro ferries. Once again we were first on and off.
The strong north easterly wind was still blowing and that afternoon there was rain soiIfelt sorry for the cyclists coming off the ferry. Guidebooks advise cyclists to tour the Hebrides from the south because of the prevailing south westerly winds but this fortnight was not the one to follow that advice. Later I talked with a Dutch couple who had cycled south from the Shetlands and had had only two days of head winds.
Looking across to South Uist. This journey is not long as the crow fies but takes an hour to do about ten miles as it is the slalom course of the ferry world with I think over twenty turns to navigate in shallow sea of the Sound of Harris and avoid rocks and islands.
