The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law. -- Deut. 29:29
The most perfect way of seeking God, and the most suitable order, is not for us to attempt with bold curiosity to penetrate to the investigation of His essence, which we ought more to adore than meticulously to search out, but for us to contemplate Him in His works, whereby He renders Himself near and familiar to us, and in some manner communicates Himself. ... John Calvin (1509-1564)
In natures, we see God, as it were, like the sun in a picture; in the law, as the sun in a cloud; in Christ we see Him in His beams; He being 'the brightness of His glory, and the exact image of His person. - STEPHEN CHARNOCK
[Christians], at their best, know that often they don't know. They do not have all the answers. They do not have God in their pocket. We cannot answer every question that any bright boy in the back row might ask. We have only light enough to walk by. Howard A. Johnson (1915- )
God has spoken.
There is a revelation of His will which we have in God's Word. On this basis we demand that the pronouncement of Gid's Word be obeyed in each clash of principles. Human interference or discretion is only to be decisive where God's word is unclear.
Everyone agrees that human insight must yield to God's pronouncements. The disagreement begins because our opponents do not believe God Himself has spoken while we confess that He has spoken.
Abraham Kuyper, The Standard, 7 June 1873
When God wants to speak and deal with us, he does not avail himself of an angel but of parents, or the pastor, or of our neighbour. Martin Luther
God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees, and flowers, and clouds, and stars. Martin Luther
The secular university is scandalized by the claims of revelation. Those who have, for whatever historical reasons, become seekers-on-principle, cannot tolerate the allegation that truth is a gift. To have to receive offends those who have determined to take.... Louis Mackey (b. 1926)
The purpose of revelation is restoration, the renewal in us of that likeness to God which man lost by sin.---- Stephen Neill in The Lion Christian Quotation Collection, 1997
