Freudian slip?

John Humphreys interviewed Slick Willy Clinton this morning on Radio 4's Today programme. The interview ended with, "Thank you president Clinton". Is JH showing ignorance, bias or an innocent mistake?

In the U.S., it wouldn't be considered bias, ignorance or a mistake. Rather, it would be considered respectful and proper. Our presidents are addressed by that title after they leave office. So maybe your interviewer was showing respect to Clinton and following the customs of the U.S. in how he was addressed.

So I stand corrected. But I am astonished at your keeping the title after the man has left the office that conferred it. After all you are the country that wanted no aristocratic titles yet in this instance strangely wish to keep a title.

A good American frien tells me, "
John Humphreys was simply following American "protocol"; it is the custom to call ex-presidents "President". In fact, most public officials retain their most recent title and retired military men are often called by their last rank. Newt Gingrich is still called "Speaker", Norman Schwarzkopf is still called "General", Sandra Day O'Connor is still called "Judge".
But Humphreys probably does hope that Hillary takes Bill's old job."
