R.I.P. George Best 25 November 2005

Simply the greatest footballer I have ever seen. I saw him receive a pass at Spurs with his back to the goal inside the penalty area. He had defenders close in eirher side. The next moment the ball was in the net. Genius. He could kick a ball like no-one else. But, sadly, he could not kick the bottle.

Hello Graham,

Just curious : do you know if he was raised "Roman Catholic" or "Protestant"? The media haven't said a word on the subject which i find a tad strange. Seems like it would be a natural question given what N.I has been famous for for decades.

George was Roman Catholic though I hear a Protestant pastor preached the gospel at the funeral.

Since I responded on the blog I have had contradictory testimony saying George was from a protestant family. Personally I think the god he worshipped, or rather was controlled by, was the demon drink. A sad, sad man and the greatest waste of God given talent I have ever witnessed. It is interesting how another footballing genius, Maradonna, was also ruined by substance abuse.

The Best family are from the Protestant Cregagh Estate in East Belfast. (I have friends and family who know them, but I don't at all). I know that his sister is an evangelical Christian, and rumour has it that George had a deathbed conversion.
